Meet the Family!
-
Bart is a Marion, TX native (small town near San Antonio), and and grew up on a farm in Texas.
He is an airline pilot by profession, and has always loved the country and the work that living there entails and wanted to get back to the land from our time living in the city.
He can fix anything, even if he hasn’t done it before, and make it look easy.
Bart loves to sacrifice himself for his family and if there is a job that needs doing you can count on him to do it. He is generally the chief executer of plans around here!
-
Frances is a Memphis, TN native and a veterinarian by training.
However the titles of wife, mom, teacher, chief organizer, researcher, planner … the list goes on … are ones she loves even more.
She is mesmerized by anything and everything about the natural world, and loves to impart her knowledge to anyone willing to listen and is always happy to learn more!
Whether it is lifesaving surgery on an animal, identifying plants in the forest or fields, planning fences, buildings, fields, or animal additions … anything about the running and improvement of the ranch or care of the animals - Frances will be involved!

Our oldest has a love and knack for photography. Actually working with animals really isn’t his jam, but documenting everything that goes on at the farm is! He has also become pretty handy and can probably wire your house better than the last electrician you hired! You can find his latest material on his YouTube channel, Jamessmith1206.

You will often find this kid snake hunting, and when he finds one there’s a high likelihood he’s going to be bringing it back to show it off!
We do our best to instill the safety first motto in this child … but he’s definitely our risk taker!
He’s also a pro at operating equipment, and has been practicing since he was 8 years old and loves it! Recently he deconstructed the fuel system on our (new to us) 1972 Massey Ferguson tractor addition and got it running again by removing about a pound rust from the fuel tank! And, yes! He also knew how to put it all back together again!
Together with his dad, he does the lion's share of the work regarding the daily cattle moves, while also keeping up with his seminar style homeschool classes.

This girl is an athlete. She has fleet feet and loves to run, but is also an artist.
She loves drawing and painting and can literally watch the horses and cows eating for hours. If there is ever anything amiss with the animals you can count on her to bring it to Mom's attention in short order!
It's difficult to get this girl to spend more time inside than she has to!
-
Our middle girl is a botanist in training. She sometimes memorizes plants on our property faster than Mom! She has a real knack to remember the names and uses of all the wild edibles, and also the ones to avoid.
This girl is also voted most likely to stick around with Mom to the bitter end of a medical procedure and take care of any animal needing tending.
-
Rita Luisa is the caboose of the family and brings so much love and laughter to our home!
Smart as a whip, and full of hugs and kisses, she is our quintessential farm girl! She loves all the animals so much and is a bottomless pit of empathy.
Rita also pays attention to all the wild edibles Mom teaches her, and is the most likely to bring you a taste of Woodsorrel to try when you visit the ranch! Try it, you'll like it!
She will be one to watch as she grows up!

Yeller stumbled on our property in Texas in 2018 as a stray. He wouldn’t leave and was so kind and gentle to our family … the rest is history as this traveling man adopted our family and we really couldn’t imagine our life without his quiet companionship.
He loves to accompany Bart and Owen on their trips to the fields to move cattle and he isn't above dips in our many creeks to cool off!
He’s a once in a lifetime kind of dog and we’re proud to have him.
